Clockheart - Sonic OC - Shivers and the Snowman

This is another collaboration between myself and Cl0ckh3art. It was one of the pictures that she had drawn along with the first picture of Shivers the Penguin. However, in this one she decided to go a step further when it comes to the cuteness factor. And I certainly agree with her on this aspect because the picture is so appropriate.

By the way, I’ve come up with a profile for Shivers (thanks to the aid of cl0ckh3art)

Appearance: ice blue feathers, black beak, purple eyes and a heart-shaped outline on her face.

Attire: Blue snow boots, blue hoodie with white fur trim and purple mittens.

Personal Information:

Personality: Shivers is very kind since she can’t stand to see cruelty in any form. She is also a very free spirit with the attitude of letting herself go wherever the wind blows (figuratively speaking). She also has a gentle disposition at least for the most part but whenever she sees cruelty raise its ugly head that’s when she brings out a side she doesn’t like to use very much: The side that kicks ass.

Hobbies/Talents: Ice/snow sculpting. Flying/Gliding. Snowboarding. Swimming. Mathematics and problem solving.

Likes: Animals. Soft Serve Ice Cream. Tabasco Sauce. Fresh Fallen Snow. Making Snowmen. The feeling of the wind on her face when flying.

Dislikes: Yellow snow. Animal Cruelty. Littering. Meanness. Bullying. Dishonesty. Slavery. Dr. Eggman.

Items: A pebble upon a string. The pebble itself is from the nest where she was born.

Vehicles: Snowmobile (The Glacier Rush)

Trivia: Shivers is not like most penguins. Firstly, because of her attitudes towards animal cruelty she is a staunch vegetarian. Eating things like sea weed, berries and other vegetation that could be found. Although among her favorites are Soft Serve Ice Cream and the spicy condiment of Tabasco Sauce. She even goes so far as to pour Tabasco sauce over ice cream because “it gives such a great sensation of the cold and the spice”.

Secondly, she can do something that no other penguin can do: she can actually fly through the air. This discovery happened while she was swimming. She was at the surface skimming along and diving out of the water and back in like the way most penguins do but then she found herself going higher and higher above the waves of the water until with one push and flap of her wings she found herself soaring higher above the water’s surface.

Then there’s her attitude towards animals instead of forcing animals into submission Shivers instead tries to talk to the animals and coax them into following her instructions with her gentle tone.

Whenever she sneezes she says “yip” in a very squeaky voice.

She sleeps with her head covered and her body uncovered and she also tends to sing in her sleep.

Relationships:

Family: Marie’s family consists of her father, Navin, who is a fish merchant. Then there’s her mother, Marie, who is a music teacher. Next are her brothers, Murphy, Mo and Vern. All three of them work with Navin as fishermen. They catch the fish and Navin sells them.

Close Friends: Her close friends are Kalahari the Kangaroo Rat and Jub the Grizzly.

Other Friends: A pet crab that she named “Mister Krabbs”.

Romantic Interest: None. Given how most of the penguins on the island view Shivers as odd none of them are attracted to her. Plus Shivers tends to find more peace being among animals than other penguins.

Rivals: The rival is named Gloria, the leader of the local swim team, because of the fact that Shivers can swim as well as fly makes Gloria think that she’s a threat to her and her position as the alpha swimmer. But the truth is that Shivers doesn’t even know about this rivalry.

Enemies: Eggman.

Battle Information:

Skills: Excellent swimmer and flier.

Techniques: Ice bombs: while flying, she can drop balls of ice upon a target. Ice Missiles: forms long icicles that can be lobbed like a short range missile.

Strengths: Speedy flier and swimmer.

Weaknesses: Gets disoriented very easily.

Weapons: None


History: Shivers is the youngest of a clutch of four eggs give or take a minute since she was the last one to hatch. Growing up was fairly usual for a penguin of her area. Although, one day when she was being served dinner, fish, she refused to eat it because she had seen her father pull it out of the ocean and her mother cut its head off. The idea of eating something that was once alive had become highly repugnant to her and from that day on she became a vegetarian.

Then one day, Eggman came to her island and kidnapped many of the penguins as well as the fish from the ocean and the crabs from her farm. And this is what spurred Shivers to leave the island and bring back her people. In her travels she met others with a similar vendetta against Eggman, namely the ones who would become part of a three creature team: Kalahari the Kangaroo Rat and Jub the Grizzly.

Clockheart - Sonic OC - Shivers the Penguin

This came out of the conversations that I had with my friend cl0ckh3art who was doing some of her own Sonic Original Characters and in turn that did inspire me to come up with my own. Among the ones that came out of the discussion was “Jub the Grizzly” which many of you have already seen. But here it is: Jub the Grizzly

It was also observed by cl0ckh3art that it seems that in Sonic the Hedgehog there are usually teams of three: Sonic, Tails and Knuckles and so on. Usually, each one is divided up into these roles: Speed, Strength and Flight. So in my case, Jub is the strength and Shivers here is the Flight. Meaning that Shivers the Penguin can actually flap her arms and fly through the air.

Now I know that many of you would contend with the idea of a Penguin flying through the air but in all fairness you do have to look at Sonic the Hedgehog: a fox with two tails that flies like a helicopter. An Echidna that can glide. Finally, a Hedgehog that goes faster than a cheetah. So I think we can suspend disbelief in that respect, don’t you?

But anyway, the way that the character design started was that I asked if cl0ckh3art could draw the character and I would do the digital line art and colors. She agreed and so it became a collaboration.

In creating Shivers the big question became of which species to use as a base. At first I went with the Emperor penguin but then cl0ckh3art convinced me to go with the smaller and cuter penguins. Like Adelie Penguin. Which are a lot smaller than the Emperor but cute as can be. But then cl0ckh3art stumbled upon what was called the “Chinstrap penguin” and had this light-bulb idea of making the line around the face into a heart shape. And it stuck.

Next was clothes. The two big ones when it comes to Sonic characters is to give them shoes and gloves. Which was easy enough but then came the issue of the third and final item that she needed. I didn’t want her to have a scarf otherwise she’d look too much like Chilly Willy. (Even though Chilly Willy is cute). So it was suggested by cl0ckh3art to give her a hoodie with fur trim.

After the line art was done the rest of the process was up to me. During the whole process of coloring cl0ckh3art had coached and helped me. Even though I was quite thickheaded as far as trying to figure out how to mimic the Sonic coloring style. But eventually it came together.
