Dannex009 - Meister Hollie and Weapon Partner Miles

Here we have the colored version of a commission I had made some months back to Dannex009.  It took him a while to get to it because the list for people in his commissions to-do list is quite long.  But I think it was well worth the wait.

The subject matter involves the Soul Eater versions of my friends Hollie and her husband Miles.  A while back I had drawn up sketches of the two of them and based on those drawings as well as some new ones that I did of Hollie and Miles, Dannex009 had rendered what is seen here:

Once it was done, at last, next came the task of coloring it.  Mainly because of the fact that Dannex009 has a tendency to make very thin lines in his lineart.  But I won’t begrudge him for that at all since I’ve colored other linearts where the lines were also thin.

In retrospect, the harder part was coloring the background because I wanted to stretch beyond my normal skills and abilities and try to render an area where the Death Weapon Meister Academy is located:  Death City.  Thanks to a few reference images I used those for color basis and went from there.

Though I was unsure when I got finished and it was thanks to clock–heart who suggested that I sleep on it that I woke today and looked at it and thought, “Yup, this is good stuff.”

Hope all of you like it as much as I do, both finished and the work I put into it.

Kay-sama - What the El?

This is the colored version of a picture that my friend Kay-sama did.

This one took me a little longer than others because I was doing a lot of experimenting with the coloring process with it. With the help of clock-heart I managed to do some tweaking with the hue selection. As I was told by her that there was a lot of saturation with the previous color pallets that I did before. To tell the truth I never really noticed it that much but I was willing to try out new things.

Finally, when it came to the background I was told that a simple sky would be sufficient but I wanted to do more given the look of this picture I felt that a quality background was needed. So I went about trying to put in clouds. Unfortunately doing it the way I had done it before just didn’t seem to cut it. So I went out into DeviantArt and searched for tutorials on cloud rendering.

And that was when I came across this by Sakura222-stock

Kay-sama - Teen Titans - Why we came to Japan

This is the colored version of the lineart “Commission for StarDragon77: Japan” by my friend, Kay-sama.

It came about when I thought about that bit from the Teen Titans movie “Trouble in Tokyo”.  I admit that I hadn’t seen all of it but I’ve seen bits and pieces.  And from what I’ve seen of it, I couldn’t help but think of the fact that the Teen Titans would come to Japan and have to face some kind of monster with Tentacles.  And any anime fan that has seen a bunch of anime (particularly hentai) will know what I’m getting at.

And Raven being Raven would have only one thing to say, “Remind me why we came to Japan?”  And the idea was so hilarious that I shared it with Kay-Sama and decided to make it a commission/collaboration between us.

Coloring Raven wasn’t really that tricky, especially since I was using the original Teen Titans color pallet.  Though I did manage to come up with a rather clever trick of doing Raven’s hair highlights.  Simply take the brush tool and make it very very thin and then run it across the hair section giving it a little jiggle and then that’s how I managed to create the highlights.  Unfortunately, this technique can’t exactly work across the board.  It only works since there are no other bangs or hairlines in the way.

Kay-sama - Artemis MIrrors - Co-ed Sports

This is the colored version of “Artemis Mirrors: Co-Ed Sports” which was drawn by my good friend Kay-Sama

 In coloring this one I decided to do a different technique of making a vignette similar to what was done in old photographs where there would be a circle, or some kind of shape around the subject and the edges would be blurred a little. Though doing it in photoshop is a lot easier than what I recall doing in a darkroom.

My reasoning for it is to give a little more focus upon the characters in the center of the picture.

Hope it all meshes well.

Kay-sama - Artemis Mirrors - Check Mate

Once he had finished it he asked me if I could color it, I said I’d give it a shot. Especially since the character that he designed, Dawn, is a female character I quite like. Not just for physical characteristics but the fact that she’s a gunner. I admit that I do like a woman character who can kick ass.

The real challenge of this one was the background because from what Kay-Sama had told me is that the world that was designed is that the colors would be rather dull and that only the characters themselves would be the only source of any vibrant hues. Certainly hope that I had brought that out.

Also the poster in the background is “Ludo” something that was told would be Adam’s (the male character in this pic) favorite band.

Kay-sama - Jason x Stephanie Brown - How You Remind Me

I will say that the trickiest part of this one was the background/foreground cloth as well as the hair but a challenge is always a good thing, don’t you think?

And I know that my collaborator Kay-Sama loves this.

Plus, it does seem to be just in time for the upcoming Valentine’s Day Holiday.

Kay-sama - HP Commish - Hermione in the Library

This is a commission that was drawn and colored by Kay-Sama.

The idea I had for this is that it would be an older Hermione Granger dressed in her uniform.  The idea of her biting the end of her quill was Kay-sama’s idea.

Kay-sama - Black Lantern Kaworu Nagisa

This was a commission that was drawn by Kay-Sama (Miles Yagami) and colored by me.

The idea I had behind this is that it would help promote a fan fiction that I am co-writing with ClassicCowboy called “Emerald Genesis”. Within that story there would be Shinji Jordan (raised by Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris) and he comes back to Japan at the behest of Gendo Ikari but before he comes back, his father, Hal Jordan, gives him a very special gift that he only tells Shinji that he’ll know when the time comes to use it.

As you can see in this setup, Kaworu has been resurrected and been brought back as a Black Lantern. In the idea that I had been bouncing around with Kay-sama is the idea that the way that Kaworu died is that his head was cut off so I figured that if it were reattached there would be a great scar running around his neck.

The only real tricky part was coloring the plugsuit because from what I’ve seen of Black Lanterns their suits are in black and the various shades of it. So I had made it in the same scheme as the original suit but in different colors that would be appropriate for the Black Lantern corps.

Now that this is done it is time for the Black Lantern oath:

The Blackest Night falls from the skies.

The darkness grows as all light dies.

We crave your hearts and your demise.

By my black hand, the dead shall rise!

Kay-sama - Artemis Mirrors Promo

Basically after the work I did on Adam and Aaron he needed my coloring skills and really how could I refuse? Especially since this one presented a unique challenge just by it’s sheer scale.

I think this one pretty much beats out my previous record for the sheer number of layers of color that I had used in Photoshop. For this picture I had used 291 layers. My previous record was a mere 82.

Kay-sama - Adam and Aaron Cover

This is a colored version of Adam and Aaron Cover that was drawn by my friend Kay-Sama who came to me and asked me to color it. I had a look at it and thought “why not?” He gave me the specifics of the characters as far as colors from the drawings that he had done before and I followed them as closely as I could.

There were a few tricky parts such as Adam (the one at the top) given the angle he was at I had to really concentrate and think of how the shading would look. Hopefully I did well.
