Coloring Commission - Rogue gets Slimed

 Here is the newest coloring commission given to me by Slim2k6.  The picture was drawn by CallMePo as part of the ongoing "Camp Woody" series that Slim2k6 has done.  When they approached me to do this piece, my first question was about the background.  Thankfully, they had a pretty clear idea of what they wanted.  They wanted a dark night, a dark forest, rogue on the ground, and mist.  

With those outlines laid out in front of me, I went right to work on it.  Though since this was something somewhat different from the others that I have done I decided to do something a little different in the shading.  That being that the light would come from the right.  When it was done I started to realize that I had made the best choice in making it come from that direction.  Gives a certain look of being ominous like the killer in a slasher film being off screen somewhere.

After applying a little mist and some stars to a night sky, the piece was done.

M. Lee Lunsford - Savage Land Storm

A while back, an old favorite artist opened up slots for commissions due to some financial issues.  The artist being M. Lee Lunsford.  And so, I asked them to do a piece of Storm in her "Savage Land" version because I wanted to have it as a gift for my girlfriend since she's a huge Storm fan.  And really, Storm just doesn't get enough attention when in the shadows of Jean Grey and Rogue. 

After I received it, I knew that my work was cut out for me.  For one the clothes would be incredibly detailed and I wanted to get her skin tone just right.  But that was only the start of it, the next big part of it was the background.  Because I knew she would be flying, she needed to be among the clouds and lightning.  So, with a few cloud and lightning brushes, I made the background.  However, I didn't want the background to be too overpowering, which I do hope that's not the case.

Coloring Commission - CallMePo - Desscribe - Swashing Her Buckle

Here we have a coloring commission made to me by Desscribe of a lineart they made to CallMePo

When I saw it, I knew it was going to be a fun one to color.  I even had a few ideas for a background.  One of the ideas that I had for a background was that it would be the interior of a spaceship a bit like one of the previous coloring commissions that Desscribe had asked of me.  Or another possibility that I had in mind was something akin to Boris Vallejo’s work where the two of them would be standing on a rock and the beautiful glory of space with twinkling stars and swirling nebula gas clouds would be behind them. 

However, at the time I did the first version of this picture, I left it blank.  But thankfully, Desscribe could commission me to give it a background and that’s what I did. 
The people, by the way, are Corsair and Katherine Summers: the parents of Scott and Alex Summers (Cyclops and Havoc of the X-men Comics).  So, thanks to Desscribe providing some scans of the comics where the two characters had made their appearance I had something to go on as far as coloring goes.

Coloring Commission - CallMePo - Will Bufford - Harley, Korra and Rogue at Mardi Gras

This is the second coloring commission in the batch from Will Bufford that involves Harley Quinn, Korra and Rogue.  It involves a lineart that he had CallMePo do for him.  The setup is that they’re all at Mardi Gras and they’re getting very…VERY crazy.  Then again, with Harley Quinn, I suppose this is just an average day for her.

Coloring this one was tricky in it’s own area.  Mainly it’s the beads that were the trickiest.  My first thought was to color them in the respective colors to their characters, red for Harley, blue for Korra and green for Rogue.  It was when I was just about done that I found out that the traditional Mardi Gras bead colors were gold, green and purple/pink.  But with the way that the beads turned out, I
liked it too much to make any color changes so I kept it. 

As far as a background goes, initially I wanted to show something of New Orleans but that seemed a little hard to do given the angle this picture was at, so I settled on a close-up of a building with some windows.  But given how it is, I think the background came out well. 

I did also think about throwing in confetti but after doing it and showing it to Will we both came to the conclusion that it was distracting and covered up too much.  So, we axed the confetti and left it as is.

Coloring Commission - CallMePo - WolfboySpike21 - Harley, Korra and Rogue

One of the newest of my coloring commissions came from WolfboySpike21 who had a few linearts done by CallMePo for this set it involves three women:  Harley Quinn (Batman), Korra (Legend of Korra) and Rogue (90′s X-men Verion).  I do admit that I do like this version of Rogue mainly because it was the version that I grew up with.  And let’s face it, we tend to like the versions we grow up with rather than most other versions that are made, am I right?

I will say this for the record that coloring Harley was a real pain in the ass.  Mainly given the level of detail and all the different nooks and crannies involved and the continuous switching between black, red and white.  Makes me miss the original Harley suit.  Nice and simple from a coloring perspective. 
Compared to that, everything else was easy.  But the result was worth it and my commissioner loved it.

Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, Desscribe could only commission me to color the two people in this picture.  The people, by the way, are Corsair and Katherine Summers: the parents of Scott and Alex Summers (Cyclops and Havoc of the X-men Comics).  So, thanks to Desscribe providing some scans of the comics where the two characters had made their appearance I had something to go on as far as coloring goes.

After it was done, all I needed to do was just put in a simple shadow and that was it.  Desscribe was happy with it so that means I did quite well.  Though I do hope that I get an opportunity to put in a background sometime in the future.

Coloring Commission - CallMePo - AvX

This is another coloring commission that was made to me by Cypher3au over at DeviantArt.com.
The lineart itself was done by CallMePo.

In this particular set, I think this one was the most simple.  I think it’s becuase when it comes to coloring bare skin, all you really need are the color and the shades for it.  It’s only when clothes are added that things start to get complicated.  ALthough, not in this case since there was only the boots and the cloaks.

I mainly say this out of the third one that Cypher3au has me doing, which will be featured here very shortly.

Len Barboza - X-men Evolution - Kurt and Kitty are Expecting

This is a new lineart that I had Len Barboza (Aquarina-chan) do for me.  The idea for it came about when a friend of mine, who is also a fan of the Kurt/Kitty pairing, had become pregnant.  And I had decided on making a small tribute piece for her.  And I thought that this would be the best way for me to do that, to have Kurt Wagner and Kitty Pryde expecting a child.

Originally, when this lineart was made for me there was no background whatsoever, it was only after I had finished coloring in Kurt and Kitty did I think that it could use a background.  This came about when I left the background blank and put in the X-men logo in the background but that didn’t look very appealing to the eye so I decided to go further.   However, I didn’t want to get rid of the X-men logo so I changed it’s color and blended it into the wood of the bed’s headboard.

CallMePo - X-men - Out Flirted

This is the colored version of “OutFlirted” by CallMePo that was commissioned to him by Cypher3au

When I had spoke with Cypher3au, I asked him he’d like me to color the Jean Grey/Emma Frost picture, I’d be more than willing to do that. He agreed and sent me the high resolution version of the picture. I knew immediately that the tricky part of this picture would be Jean’s “Flame Wings”. But, I just went about coloring Jean and Emma and left the Flame Wings until the end.

And it was thanks to MissMinority’s FireTutorial that I was able to create the effects that you see here.

Len Barboza - Nightcrawler’s new Uniform

This is the colored version of a new lineart that Aquarina-chan did for me.

Some of you may know that I did had something similarly done with Bokuman

The inspiration that I got for his outfit came from another deviant artist. So I’d like to thank IvyBeth and her Nightcrawler piece:

Even though something like this had already been done with bokuman I still wanted to have something like this done with the version of Nightcrawler from “X-men Evolution”. He certainly looks even more bad-ass than before, wouldn’t you all agree?

I know that there is no background for this but I was having some enormous difficulty with that. So if any of you would like to help out with that I’d appreciate it.

Len Barboza - Kurt and Kitty in Love

This is a colored lineart that I had commissioned from Aquarina-chan (Len Barboza). The idea of it is that I wanted this picture to be a fairly loving picture of a favorite pairing of mine: Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler) and Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat). Of course in this I had her use the X-men Evolution version.

The only real tricky parts about this was mimicking the colors, shading style as well as putting in a fairly decent background. I had tried to paint some grass into this but it never really came out the way I had hoped so I basically resorted to using a grass photo pattern and giving it a perspective distortion. So if any of you out there know of any grass photoshop painting tutorials let me know. And I mean the kind where it’s from an above angle, not the side-angle that most tutorials here have.

Yamer - Chibi Nightcrawler

This one is of one of my favorite X-men characters - Kurt Wagner. Otherwise known as “Nightcrawler”. However, in this one, I didn’t have Yamer use the comics or the movie version. Instead for this I had her use the X-men Evolution version of him.

Bokuman - Nightcrawler

This is the colored version of the New Commission that Bokuman did for me.

For a while now I wanted to do some kind of artwork with one of my favorite X-men, Kurt Wagner, otherwise known as Nightcrawler.

The inspiration that I got for his outfit came from another deviant artist.  So I’d like to thank IvyBeth and her Nightcrawler Peice

The reason why it took me so long to color this one is because of two things.

First even though some would say it’s simple but it only does from a certain perspective.  Coloring the uniform with only three simple colors (and their various gradations) but the outfit itself as multiple surface areas and that’s what made it difficult.

The second most difficult part of this was the “Bamf Smoke”.  It was a challenge and something that I had never done as far as my photoshop techniques.   Thankfully here at DeviantArt there are dozens of tutorials on this subject.

So I would like to thank MahadosKnight for his Smoke Effect Tutorial

Though after it was done I decided to do two versions.  One with smoke and one without.
